Found Travis' channels on YT and LBRY. Looking forward to meeting with the group at the end of next month.
Soon to be Missourians here. Found a sweet place near the national forest in TX county not far from the population center of the US. Already connected with local amateur radio operators and several local like-minded people through my work near Mansfield.
Fairly self-sufficient family; however, we have not ever been able to grow much of our own food because land is $$$$$$$ in the NannY state. We do what we can where we can.
My background is in electrical engineering and machine building. I am opening an office in central Missouri for my engineering company after celebrating 14 years stumbling after God's plan for us at the home location. My boss (no, not my wife) and I feel it's time to branch out into the rest of the country. I have worked for a 600-head dairy farm since 2003 as a part-time mechanic, truck driver and IT specialist (weird, I know; I will be looking for a similar situation once we get settled, although I am committed to this year's harvest at my current location I will be looking for a farm that needs a crazy truck driver and stupid-smart equipment technician - I spent the last 12 years keeping a New Holland FX58 going way past it's prime). I have traveled extensively both on missions and for work in Asia, Europe, Caribbean and US. I have experience with solar power generation as well planning and installing solar generators in Haiti. Since most of you will have cell phones and know the perils of broken screens, you may find it interesting that I also built some of the machines that test the cover glass used in various maker's devices including Samsung and Apple. We found that most of the issues with broken glass in cell phones was due to poor package design and not always the fault of the glass itself.
My wife has spent most of her life in retail and banking at various levels as well as learning to garden and preserve the food we do grow. Having raised three only children, she is ready for the next chapter in our crazy adventure.
All of our children are grown, the youngest having just shipped of to Fort Jackson for BCI and hoping to get a 15Y MOS working in Virginia later this year.

Welcome to the group. I hope your move is hassle-free. I feel for you, though bud. My husband doesn't have degrees, but he is a mathematical genius by nature with a penchant for mechanics. I'm not being biased. As his wife I can utterly yell the man lacks common sense, sometimes.
But when it comes to jack trades everybody and their dog needs him. They cannot fire him, they cannot decide where they need him the most because he's so smart and will do everything well and often in cost-effective means. Eventually, he ends up running the whole thing after everyone throws up their hands with indecision.
It's frustrating because I need him on the homestead, too. But he's too busy. People started prioritizing manpower in this way about 18 mos ago. And this is from folks who either don't need to worry much about what's coming or from people who really don't know what's coming. They're just tightening their belts for a tough economic ride. I see the shift already happening (red state, btw).
I imagine this will be worse and we're looking into ways to smooth over his inaccessibility.

The appraisal is IN!!!! We can finally close next week. When I walked the house on Monday, there was new damage where someone tried or succeeded in breaking in through the back door. No visible damage; the house is empty, so nothing to steal (previous owners stole everything of value). The casing is broken and needs to be replaced. Found a really good insurance agent in Rolla with AllState. Been a customer of the company for nearly 30 years, not really interested in trying to find a new company right now.
Really looking forward to meeting everyone on the 22nd. The meeting place is about about 30 minutes from home to be.

Is there a high elevation around the Forest? We are searching for the land with a house/ farm in there as well. But I hope to get something with somewhat high elevation ... any suggestions where should I look? Thank you

Lana,
Our property is above 1000ft. There are a lot of hills in the eastern part of the county. Since a big part of the county is contained within the national forest, you will find quite a few properties that are wooded.
I can't speak much to the areas east of the county, but, in this state, south of I-44 is good all the way to Arkansas.
I don't like much of the land along 13 in the west of the state, but there is pretty good fishing up through KC.
I found the property we are buying by spending a lot of time driving around the southern part of the state and camping in the Mark Twain.

Oldie,
We are buying a place about 35 minutes east of the MAG meeting place in Texas county.
I didn't get a chance to talk to you at the August meeting, but I'm hoping to talk to you next month. I won the t-shirt from the Missouri Liberty raffle.
I've been coming to the Springfield area for almost 20 years. My wife's parents moved to Polk county from Texas when they retired. I am pretty familiar with the west central part of Missouri within a couple hours of Lebanon.
We are in limbo still with the house closing. The bank has been splitting hairs on documentation of funds transfers. For anyone who is reading this, make sure any money you have set aside for a down payment has been in your bank account for 3 to 6 months if you are not selling another property to fund your down payment. We sold some CD's to have enough money and it's turned into a quagmire because the bank rep doesn't understand penalty fees for selling a CD before it matures.
Pray that we will actually close tomorrow (8/26), but I highly doubt it will happen this week. I'm about to have an ulcer and my wife is on the verge of a nervous breakdown over this. We tendered our offer almost three months ago. The appraisal company was 6 weeks late, which has caused a lot of the issues we are having with the mortgage under writers being late. The run around we are getting from the bank is ridiculous. Stay away from Bank of England!! Our processors have been great, but their managers are brain dead. As soon as we sell our house in NY, we are refinancing our Missouri property to a local bank, unless was can cash out (doubtful). I know even a local bank will sell the note to Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac anyway, but at least the servicing bank will be local.

It's finally done. We signed all paper work today and I have the keys to the property.
After 90 days, I almost cannot believe we actually own a home in Missouri.

We are fully moved OUT of NYS. Can't say we've funny moved into the new house, but the last load of parked out front as of 19:20 09-14. So happy! Now the work begins. :-)

Thanks, Oldie. It is a bit strange for us. We've been in NY 22 years and raised our boys in the woods and farms of western NY, but they are all moved on to other places around the world. So, now it's our turn.
We are starting all over again, but the Lord has blessed us with awesome connections here in the Ozarks.
One of the neighbors came by over the weekend and mowed down the upper field for us.

Funny thing about neighbors in the Ozarks, they tend to show up and just do things LOL
