We were living in TX, just NW of Ft. Worth. Nice green area, but we wanted to get out away from the congested areas and Texas land is selling at a premium right now. The property taxes are an outrage there, too. We were literally within a couple of weeks of settling on buying property in Arkansas. We had it narrowed down to a few pieces of land, and I was so excited to be going there. I think Arkansas is so beautiful! Well, things didnt go as planned (sorry, my apostrophe key is busted).
We had asked the Lord to get us out of debt and keep us that way, and He has been faithful to us, so I see this as an answered prayer and Im thankful and working on my crummy attitude. We are in the Mohave Desert in AZ-- BUT we are on our own land and we do NOT have to go into debt for it. We have a little piece of very rural land, a house, a couple of out buildings and the crappiest soil you ever saw. We are overrun with ground squirrels that chew off every single thing I plant in pots as soon as it breaks the surface of the ground. I have a tiny fenced area that does nothing to keep the ground squirrels out, but does keep the wild burros and range cattle from reaching in. Its about 105-115 degrees out there in the afternoon this time of year, so I have to be able to move any (theoretical) survivors under some cover for the worst heat of the day.
First item on our agenda: clear a fence line and put up 6 ft a fence with an electric strand to keep the cattle off it.
Second item: Figure out how to deter these stinking ground squirrels.
Third item: Start working on this dusty, rocky dirt!
Fourth item: Plan out where to plant hearty indigenous trees so that the tender plants are shaded in the afternoons. Shade cloths, shadows... whatever works.
(Probably more concurrent than in any real order, time wise.)
We had lived here before, so this isnt brand new to us, but I was SURE Id never be back, so Im ill prepared. Oh, well... one step at a time. On with the composting....
On a bright not: When I DO get produce, solar dehydrators are the shiz out here.
