It has been a crazy past couple of weeks. The weather has been totally nutz around here, from rain to ice then to snow, and more snow. Then the week of sub zero cold. It has been a time of learning for sure. Now, we need to step back and look at what we have learned from this, so we will be better prepared for the next time it happens. It will happen again, maybe not this year, but definitely in the future. Whether the Grand Solar Minimum is fact or fiction. Whether its weather modification, or just mother nature, it will happen again. So what have we learned? First off I would say, insulate those pipes that gave us trouble. If they froze and didn't break, you are lucky. If they did break then when you fix them, or if they just froze, figure out what you need to do to prevent it from happening again. I know I have one line I need to repair, and maybe more. It is in a building that we used to heat, but haven't for the last few years. Usually I drain the system, but do to health reasons I didn't get it done. My fault, but now when its repaired, it will get an extra bunch of insulation around it. Next, I think I will add a propane vent-less heater in another part of the house for back-up. We have one in the kitchen, but another one would be great. They don't seem to use that much fuel and they don't require electricity. I need to get more wood split up and up closer to the house. I had 10 cords, but it wasn't all split into pieces that are easy to get into the stove by my better half. Not that I make her load the stove, but if she wakes up and just happens to want to throw some wood in, it would be nice for her to be able to do it. How did your drinking water fair out? Did you have enough, did it freeze up, what about water for the bathroom to flush the toilet, dishes, hygiene, and just that general use to clean up the muck that gets tracked in. With snow on the ground, its melt-able if you have a way to heat it. We did alright, because we didn't lose power, but had we been like Texas, we might have been in trouble. I know I'm kind of rambling, but, I think it's important to look at events and see what we can do to make it better next time. Jump in here and let us know how you did.

Yes it was quite the challenge. We were fortunate had some lines freeze but not break. Found out the wood stove was not quite warm enough for the basement and outside wall areas in the kitchen. Was able to unthaw with furnace and opening doors and vents in areas of the house that don’t normally get heated. Animals was a challenge as well keeping them with fresh water and hay. No losses for us but was not fun working in the cold. That was eye opening in Texas. What a terrible situation for those people. Sorry I did not see this post before now. If you guys ever need anything you have my e mail and number.

lstractorman, I think we all learned some lessons from this crazy weather. Now, its like spring fever has struck. My wife is busy getting her seeds started, I'm still crippled up with this foot, but it is healing. Luckily I have Great neighbors that have been a big help. This injury has taught me one thing that I feel is the best lesson to learn. You cannot depend on just yourself to get it done when SHTF.

We learned to have more wood split for next winter. Need to insulate under the cabin and shirt it. I will be making a building around our water totes. The ball valve cracked but didn't leak any water out. Thanks for the extra wood Scott we really appreciate it and will get it back to you soon. Getting windshield fixed in my truck this week and replacing the water pump. Our garden is ready for planting. Hope to see everyone soon. Take care yall

Been busy around here also. Sheri has been planting seeds and transplanting plants, I been busy getting the greenhouses up and ready. Been real lucky to have a couple of young men up the road that have been helping out. Am thinking about adding a rear tine tiller to the garden machinery. Sure would make the final seed bed a lot nicer.
