Wondering what everyone thinks about the best firearm for home defense...
What are the pros and cons of the different types of firearms?
Where do you balance the need to stop the bad guys without over penetrating and hurting the good guys by accident?
Have you thought out and practiced "fire drills" in case of a break in?

Before I lost all my firearms in a tragic boating accident I had a semi-auto 9mm pistol with hollow points on the nightstand, that was my first line of defense. It allowed me to lay down fire while getting to my pump shotgun in the corner.
I like the pump shotgun because I can load it with birdshot that won't over penetrate through the walls too much, and being able to shoot one load one means more shots available. I can also put buckshot or slugs on the stock in case birdshot isn't working.

I too mourn my firearms so tragically drowned in the lake! Can't go wrong with a shotgun, handgun (on your person at all times) and an ar-15 with a "special trigger" next to your bed and doors. Shotgun for inside at close range. Our home is on a hill and we have a 360 view from the inside the house. The ar can be used to pick them off in the yard.

Aariell, the AR is a great platform....I really need to save and buy one with a stash of freedom seeds. Half of our view is shotgun range, the other side is .308 range.
What do load your shotgun with for indoors?

Bigfoot2, you are right on there. But he sure burns a lot of rounds with that brain.

12 guage with extended tube (8 shot) loaded with alternating 00 buck and sabot rounds. Good deal. I loaded up slugs and short bird shot. Told the wife to squeeze and pump until it went "click" of anyone tried to mess with her. I think there's 7 or 8 rounds, total. Amazing how many short cartridges fit in a shotgun made for up to 3" magnum.

Never been the best with a pistol and ageing eyes suck, so I use a 12 gauge 00 buck shot with stream light mounted on it. My wife and I practice clearing the house with it once a week to stay in toon👍.

Honestly, the "best firearm for home defense" is whatever firearm you have at hand. Get what you can afford, learn to use it properly and get training. That said....

AR-9 Pistol (10.5”) suppressed w/sub sonic hp. That’s my dream home defense.
Reality is a pump 12 gauge with dove loads. Light bird shot doesn’t penetrate dry wall at typical hall way distances. Mine is an old cop turn in Remington. Reliable as the sun coming up in the east.

Type of firearm is going to greatly depend on where you live and your property layout. A 12 gauge is great for inside the home especially if you can not do training, just point and shoot. BB shot followed by a slug will do a great job. that said if you got property an AR would be a better choice.

Chances are many people have families. And, chances are, the primary home defense weapon has to be suitable to a female size and frame for use ALSO by a wife/mom. I am 5'3" and a woman. My hands-down choice would be a Mossberg 500 with the 18" barrel. Also, in a live intruder situation, it's nice to know I can point in the general direction of a target and the shot will get something. Versus I'd have to be dead on with any other rifle or hand-gun. If you're well trained, and you're the sole user, then opt for something else. But, if you are looking for a general purpose self-defense for the more untrained person, this is hte way to go. Also, it's nice because it's usable for hunting...more bang for your buck.
