How prepared are you for an injury on the homestead? We talked about it when we first started out building the place. We bought a few small first aid kits, boxes of band-aids, antibiotic ointment, and ace bandage wraps. We have been able to handle the small things, the heart attack about took me out. That was a trip to the hospital, and an unexpected bill. But we made it. My wife blew out her knee, requiring surgery, but we made it thru. Last Nov, I tore off most of the meat on my heal. This was like a tennis ball in diameter and almost a 1/2 inch deep. I was surprised there wasn't much blood. Now this happened while I was out splitting wood for the wood stove. on the Fri after Thanksgiving. We have gone threw $100's of dollars of bandage materials, but it was getting better. Finally we opted to go to the Dr and they sent us to wound theropy. Not because the wound looked bad but because it is healing so slowly. So we made the hour trip to the wound clinic, they looked at it,cleaned a little debris off from around it and gave us some silver coated gause to pack it with. Started with a weekly check, then finally every 2 weeks. The last appointment I was told that the wound should be healed over in the next 3 weeks, and then we will start beginning to learn how to walk on it. Hopefully I will get back to doing my chores on the homestead. My wife has been a champ, she does all the chores, is getting the greenhouses filled with plants to be planted, I only hope to have it ready for her.
I have said all this just to say, you never know when something bad is going to happen, or how will you recover from it. Do you have an extended wound care treatment kit? How about a good first aid kit, or first aid knowledge. What about a way to talk to each other while you are on different places on your homestead? Just some thoughts to think about.

Just to add an update, the Dr has finally released me for lite duty. Meaning I cannow wear a regular shoe for a couple hours a day on flat surfaces. Guess he has never been on a Missouri farm, there is no flat level surfaces lol. But we will take it, and try not to mess it up so hopefully by harvest time I can get back into the swing of things.

When it rains it pours around here. Now that the foot has healed, the Cardio Dr says they have found a problem with the abdominal aorta and are going to do a graft in the first part of Aug. Once they fix that I should be up to speed and can get things going again. Thanks for asking.

This is definitely a concern and it seems the older folks are in a better position to buy land and get it set up. The amount of work required to be self sufficient is more than 2 old people can do and family in not in the same mind set and seeing what is actually happening in our country. Maybe a community of people living and working together would be a possibility in this area. Combining resources and knowledge? Maybe an idea for a new thread. ? I know in our case we have the items and could easily sell our farm here to move but the effort and energy without some young people involved would make that a very difficult task indeed

I really think loosely affiliated, MAG's (mutual assistance groups) are the way to go. Not "communities" or communes of preppers that live together, but good people with pre-existing agreements to help each other when in need living near each other (same town/city/county, etc). A few family's or individuals helping each other when needed, but totally autonomous, and then that group is available if needed for a neighboring MAG if needed (like if your MAG needs to help with another one in the next county in case of hardship or emergencies like flooding, medical issues, security, etc). Just my two cents.

lanette, bigfoot2
We have tried to form a community on our 30 acres, but can't seem to find anyone that is willing to put the effort in to it to make it work. Most young people are to far in debt or work brittle to want the obligation. We have formed an area MAG, with local neighbors. I say local but here that is up to 30 miles lol.

"We have tried to form a community on our 30 acres, but can't seem to find anyone that is willing to put the effort in to it to make it work." I'd want to run background checks on people I didn't know well. Trust but verify

bigfoot2,
We have tried five times to move someone on the farm. 3 times with family and twice with friends. The family was the worst. As for the two friends, well, 1 was still in love with the world and went back to it. The other is still a close friend, and at that time we knew he was in a very fluid situation, and as it turned out God has used him to help many people, including us. If him or his family ever needed a place he knows he is always welcome here. Unfortunately, a background check would not have detected any of these problems.

Yeah, I was half joking about the background checks.

Thats OK bigfoot2 If the fact checkers for FB are like some enforcement agency's I don't know who I would trust.

HAHAHA, I got that backwards. I think some law enforcement agency's are as reliable as the fact checkers for FB.

I've spent more time in Facebook jail the last two years than actually on Facebook. I consider it a badge of honor these days. It means i'm guilty of spreading the TRUTH. I WILL re-offend!

An additional update, the graft has been done, the post op visit is behind us. Now, just time to heal. Limits on lifting and bending and walking and just about everything but typing LOL. However, I am healing and looking forward to seeing everyone on the 22nd at the meet-up. Thanks for all the prayer.
