Hi there, I cannot figure out how to add a photo to my profile instead of the silly blank face if anybody will help out with that. Hello we are in Ohio I lived in Mo. on Lake Pomme De Terre from the ages of 11 to 33.. I am 60 years old and have been a homesteader/prepper for most of my life. My husband and I garden on our little two acres extensively, we used to provide our local farm market with fresh berries, produce, flowers and honeybee products. We no longer do the market, I am a writer, herbalist and photographer and watch my Grandkids a lot. I have done much canning through the years, I now have a solar oven, we use wood and pellets for heat. I see us as pretty prepared, the only area I lack in is I am scared of guns, so wow huh. My Uncles target practiced at family reunions as a child and meanwhile if you looked for me you would find me under Grandma's bed with my hands pressed against my ears and I also cried and tried to crawl under the car seat when our parents took us to see fireworks. I do think my ears are extra sensitive. I would love some conversations with some like minded souls. Love and Light, Trend

Trend, welcome to the board. Sounds like you have had an interesting life. It is good to see people with prepping and homesteading skills on here. My wife and I have been here on our homestead just a little over 20 yrs, we carved it out and spent our first 6 months in a tent while we built our home. Well it was actually a pole barn with an apartment in one end. We wound up with about 3 acres of gardens and also did the farmers markets. As we have gotten older now we just grow for us and our neighbors. How do you like your solar oven? We have talked about one but just never got around to doing it yet.

Hi Oldie, that sounds like quite an experience living in your tent/pole barn while your house was going up. Yes the market is a lot of work, we raised our kids doing it and it was a good experience for them. I DO like the solar oven. First I got a solar cooker from Haines, I really like it too. We have a wood stove that helps heat the house but it would be difficult to do any cooking on it if and when the power goes out. I also have a little rocket stove so I will be able to fix food if and when. This board doesn't seem very active, it would be fun if more people would participate but I do appreciate your response. I wonder what state you are in? Has it been as humid there lately as here? I am having a hard time with the heat, we don't have air and I try to tell myself it is cleansing when I am sweating buckets but seriously it is a pain. What all did you plant this year?

Trend, we are in South Central Missouri, and yes it has been hot and humid. Sweating buckets is good for the system but you need to drink barrels of water. We were able to get a wood fired cooking stove that we used to heat our living quarters in the pole barn. It does a good job, but you have to feed it every 3 hours when it gets really cold. Which it does here quite often lol. We plant lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, potatoes, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, squash, zucchini, onions, cucumbers, peppers, carrots, beets, pumpkins, canteloupe, watermelon, okra, and whatever else my wife wants to try hehe.
