Greetings! I reached out to the Missouri Homesteaders group on FB recently and was graciously directed here by them.
My name is Dan and my family and I moved to MO in early Feb 2021 (right in the middle of that ice storm) from the east side of Washington State. I retired from the Air Force in 2016 having had a diverse career spanning the globe in combat and non-combat roles. I was a aircraft mechanic on A-10s for about 5 years, a firefighter for 7 ,and finished out the rest as a MQ-9 Reaper sensor operator. Upon retirement, we moved up to WA (which was a big mistake) and started homesteading. We spent the next 4-5 years building up the homestead to so we could be as self-sufficient as possible.
We've always had our eye on MO and the plandemic was the last straw for us. The tyrannical hammer of WA state was visibly hurting my family. In December of 2020, we put our place on the market. It just happened to be that it was the absolute perfect time in the market to sell what we had. I had visited MO a few times in the past few years and each time I drove through, I was pulled to the Hickory County area. Besides the awesome schools, I the area just "felt right" to me. We sold our place in WA in under a week for a great price and we made the move in February. We had to make FOUR 1,700 mile round trips to get all our "stuff" here (in the middle of that nasty ice storm too!) But we made it and immediately we got started building up our new homestead. We've built a 1/3rd acre garden/orchard combo and we'll be getting livestock in Spring of '22 with a likely focus building a small herd of cattle, but we'll have all the other normal homestead animals as well.
I have a diverse set of skill sets not only from the military, but from 5-6 years now of building up a working homestead. The short list...
- Aerial Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance expert
- Versed in small arms
- Numerous IFSTA certifications in firefighting including: HAZMAT Tech, Rescue, ICS, ect.
- Knowledgeable in mechanics
- Leatherworking (mostly belts, holsters, tack)
- Experienced grower-- maintained 1/4 garden and 2 acres of certified organic garlic in WA
- Occasional article writer for newspaper and New Pioneer magazine
- Occasional podcaster (American Engaged on Podbean)
- Civically involved--Constitutional activist, 2020 Presidential Elector, National Delegate, and Precinct Committee Officer
I believe everyone should have one specialty/passion they're highly proficient at, yet would be well versed in a variety of of subjects. I'm a lifelong learner. I love our Constitution. I like to be prepared for my country and my family.
Happy to be here and I hope I get the chance to meet up with other likeminded folks in the area!
